The effect: It is one of the two carotenoids contained within the retina of the eye. Within the central macula, zeaxanthin is the dominant component. It provides the primary yellow pigment, it is a food dye. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids that filter harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light and act as antioxidants in the eye, helping protect and maintain healthy cells.
